FAQS

Why should I order my PAINTING FROM A PHOTO from you?

My work is signed and I stand behind it. I have over 30 years experience as an artist and I take pride in my work. Most companies do not even bother to give an artist’s name. My work is 100% hand painted by brush directly on canvas. Often what is called hand painted is a digital reproduction with added embellishment. My goal is to create something unique from your photograph, not just an uninspired duplication on canvas.

Why to you only offer ONE SIZE, ONE STYLE and ONE PRICE?

Ordering becomes very easy! Although no two pictures are ever the same, the format is always similar; colored paint on a toned 9” X 12” canvas. By simplifying my product, I am able to offer an excellent price. The cost of shipping stretched canvas can be very high. As I paint on a standard size of canvas panel, I am able to offer FREE SHIPPING anywhere in the United States.

What kind of paint do you use and on what do you paint?

I purchase 9” X 12” archival cotton canvas panels and apply a glaze to them in a mid-value earth tone. I find this easier than beginning on a stark white canvas and the result has a natural organic appearance that I like. I paint with “Flashe” by Lefranc & Bourgeois. After you approval I apply two coats of varnish for protection.

What is “Flashe” paint?

During my experience as a muralist I discovered a paint respected in my field called “Flashe” by Lefranc and Bourgeois. This artist’s grade paint, imported from France, is highly durable with excellent colorfastness. It is esteemed by muralists and in fresco repair due to its matte sheen. As its name indicates, “Flashe” is quick drying, which allows me to quickly build up layers of glazed color. It is a non-toxic water-based paint.

How should it be framed?

My paint is not water-soluable and I apply a varnish to the final result. It should be framed like an oil or acrylic painting. Glass is not necessary.

What do you charge?

I charge $80 for a single subject and $40 for additional people or pets, vehicles or other large elements. Please inquire about pricing for group portraits.

How much is the Deposit and is it refundable?

The non-refundable deposit is $25. If you are dissatisfied with the results of your finished painting you are under no obligation to pay the balance.

What if I don't like the painting?

After I paint the canvas I will email you the results so you preview it. At that time you can request modifications and I will gladly try to make them. Please look at your photograph carefully before you submit it as I may be unable to make large corrections to the completed painting. Is there a some change that I can adjust for before I begin to paint such as the color of a dress? If you are still not completely satisfied you are under no obligation to purchase the painting. Sales are final after shipment.

How do I email my photos?

I can accept any file size as an email attachment. Please send the highest resolution available as a .jpeg, or a .tiff

What about the copyright?

As the artist I own the copyright. However you have my permission to use and to reproduce your painting for your own personal or professional use. Please credit me when possible. If you wish to use the artwork for retail purposes, please receive my permission.

Can you make alterations to the photographs?

As an artist I have quite a bit of freedom to make changes but keep in mind that the photograph is my primary source of information. It is fairly easy to change hair color but it is more difficult to drastically alter a hairstyle. I will be happy to answer your questions when I have had a chance to look at your photo.

Can you combine the subjects of two photographs?

Yes. Send me the photographs and I will confer with you about composition.

Shall I send more than one photograph?

If you have additional photographs that you think might be useful for reference, by all means send them. Also include any information you think might be useful such as eye color that can be hard to identify in a photo.

How do I photograph pets?

Outside in natural light works best, preferably in the early morning or late afternoon, (the golden hours). Take the picture from the same level as your pet. Take more than one picture without cropping the ears and paws and take close-ups of the head. The zoom lens from a distance tends to distort. If possible, try to place your pet in a contrasting background; a dark ground for a light colored pet or a light ground for a dark colored pet. For more than one pet in a painting take one picture together for size comparison. The key to getting a good photograph is to take many and choose the best ones.

Are the oil paintings on your site for sale?

Let me know the painting you may be interested in and I will let you know its availability. I also have archival giclée that I have made of many of the paintings.

How do I begin?

Send your photo(s) and any questions or comments. I will let you know if your photo was satisfactory, answer any questions and email you an invoice for $25 via PayPal.
